Building week

The work has commenced.

As I had an idea of how I wanted my bike workshop to look, I started to model it in Maya. I created a building with a wide door and a big shop-style window. I designed a long work table and a guest bench as elements of the interior of the place. Next, I imported all the above elements to Unity. I had to re-assign new materials to some of the objects, but it was not a big issue.

The next step was to focus on tools. I searched for necessary equipment in the Unity Asset Store and happily found several useful tools, such as screwdrivers, wrenches, drill and pliers.

Unity Asset Store was also the place where I resourced my first bicycle from. It was however not the best quality bike with angular wheels, so had to look further to find something more suitable. This first bike is still in the game though, placed in the corner of the room as one of the bikes waiting to be repaired.

I found the bike I was happy with on TurboSquid. I downloaded it (it was a free model) and placed it in the scene. From the same place I sourced a set consisting of 4 bicycles which I personalized and placed in front of the building in the game. A bike pump also comes from TurboSquid.

To add a more workshop-like feel and look to the place, I added a big board on the wall above the table, and attached a couple of wheels to it.

Next, I put ceiling lamps and a couple of fluorescent lamps above the wall board. Those are also Unity Asset Store models.

BIKEhouse, which is the name of the workshop in my game, came to my mind while I was working on the building model in Maya. I created an enormous 3D text saying BIKEhouse and placed it on the roof of the place. It was next imported to the project in Unity.

I have then decided that it would be a perfect name for the actual game, too. House provides a shelter, and, in my game it is a shelter for the bikes where bicycles are taken care of, and people are taught how to do it in their own houses.
