Maya modelling continues
Having a laptop with Maya working on it is a great relief (a blessing some people would say). I downloaded my project from the cloud and it sadly came out that some of the textures hadn’t saved properly. It also wasn’t the latest version of the Holiday Destination I was working on. Some assets were missing. That means I had a lot of work with modelling and texturing once again. It was still better than starting from the beginning, though.
I decided to focus on the most important elements I wanted to include in my sweet holiday destination. I worked on patches of grass first. It is an edible grass, like in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, even though it looks like a regular green grass. I have watched a couple of video tutorials with two very different ideas of how to make grass in Maya. In the end, I decided to do it my own way. First, I made a strand of grass, and then created a UV. Next steps were to design a texture (I painted a pattern in Pixlr) and then to apply it to a model. A ready single grass strand was duplicated and made in several variations, next put together to create a patch of grass. Sounds simple, but it was a time-consuming process.
Next, I created sweeties for the scene. I wanted them to be placed randomly around the hills in my destination. I had made a basic wrapped candy shape and then created three various designs. I assigned a New Material (Blinn) to them and added different colours to various faces, to make them look interesting and appetizing.
Ater that, I worked on fixing lollipops I had created previously, as they lost their textures. I added new, chocolate-looking shiny design to them.
I also made a couple of odd-looking chocolate trees, as well as colourful lollipop-trees. Even though, there is still a lot to be done, and Maya can be very temperamental on the laptop I am currently using (freezes every now and then and must be restarted which takes my precious time away), I am glad about the progress I have been making.
Also, my current experience has prepared me for the industry work, where not always everything goes as planned, corrupted files appear, and even powerful machines die. It is important to overcome the crisis and carry on from where we were put by so-called unforeseen circumstances.
