Skills.
This week was dedicated to skills. Identifying various skills is a challenging task, however, evaluating them can be an essential step in a career path and understanding what types of jobs might be good for me. Some suggestions on how to approach thinking about skills were:
- Technical skills – understood as specific abilities I have in a particular field, such as programming, data analysis, graphic design, 3d modelling etc. Considering the following questions might be helpful in the process of assessing skills:
- What technical skills do I possess? Making a list of all the technical skills I have acquired, either through education or work experience, or other opportunities.
- How advanced are my technical skills? It is crucial to assess how comfortable I am with each of the skills, and consider how much experience I have used them.
- Are there any technical skills I am especially proficient in? What is it?
- How much do I enjoy using my technical skills? How often do I do that? To identify which technical skills I genuinely enjoy using and which ones I find tedious or challenging.
- How do m technical skills transfer to work activities? Reflecting on how my skills can be applied to specific work positions, tasks etc.
- Soft skills. Not undervalued anymore! These are the personal qualities that enable us to work effectively with others, such as communication, problem-solving, or teamwork. Answering questions can help to Identify soft skills:
- What soft skills do I have? Writing them down is essential.
- How advanced are they? Similar to technical skills, we can be more or less comfortable with each of the soft skills. How much experience do I have, are there any soft skills I am great in?
- How much do I enjoy using my soft skills? Which ones give me joy, and which do I find challenging or stressful?
- How do soft skills transfer to work activities? How my skills can be applied to specific job tasks, and which types of roles might require those skills?
All the gathered information can help me better understand my skills. This knowledge can be used to evaluate potential job opportunities and determine which roles might be a good fit for my skill set and interests. This process will also identify areas where I might want to focus on improving my skills to achieve my career goals.
