Reflections on a finished MV project

It is quite hard to believe that I have just finished my first VR project. There were loads of issues on the way to accomplish this assignment and having moments when technical difficulties prevented me from carrying on, was simply demotivating. Yet I managed to build a VR MV that I am proud of.

After my laptop had broken down, I had a rough moment. I tried to focus on elements (photographs, videos, notes) I had at that moment and to carry on from there. Fortunately, the computer was fixed, and all the data recovered. I still had time to make a progress with the project.

I was working on it and correcting little elements until the very last minute, before presenting it to my course group. I had built and run the video on my Quest 2, recorded it and then demonstrated it. After showing the final project, I talked about the concept (detailed storyboard was the key), steps I took and difficulties I have experienced. Overall effect is very pleasing, even though some element could have been neater and more synchronized.

While working on this project, I have learnt a lot about animation, Unity and VR. I also enjoyed watching all the projects prepared by my colleagues. We all have had a different approach to this assignment, focused on various elements and learnt from each other.

In my MV, I wanted to tell the story through the three scenes I had created and to make them work together as a VR experience. I couldn’t test it properly due to lack of space; I simply couldn’t walk everywhere in the scene but managed to have a few steps on the roof in the first scene and look down at the streets. In other two scenes, similarly I took several steps in the actual experience and it felt good. Next time, I definitely need to think more of the scale of my project.

I must admit that my favourite is the last, Space scene. I like everything about it, from the characters, through the animations, to the music, invisible floor, coloured lights to the actual surroundings, the space. I think it works well in the VR.

Within the next few months, I will be working more closely with Unity and developing my skills. I would like to focus on interactions and locomotion in VR, as well as some special effects in Unity.
