Iris. MV storyboard.
As I decided to change the song, I wanted to use in my MV project, I needed to create a new storyboard for it. I first looked at the official video featuring the movie and then at the clip the band performing the song had published. I included links to both in my Padlet.
I divided the lyrics into sections and then started to think about the scenes and the characters for each of them.
I set up a new Unity project. Changed the Build Settings to Android and adjusted all needed options. Choosing Oculus in the XR Plug-in Manager was one of the important elements, too
as mentioned previously Oculus Quest 2 is the Head-Mounted Display for VR I build the project for.
Next, I was focused on creating the story I wanted to tell through my video. I knew it would be inspired by the “City of Angels” movie, but obviously not the same.
The first scene I knew how I want to present was the Space Scene, how it is called now. I imagined the user will land in a space-like environment, standing on the invisible floor, having nothing but the dark space with millions of stars around him. The music plays on and as the user turns around, he spots some characters moving in the scene.
There will be three characters there: 1. a surgeon – as a reference to the movie; he’ll be walking around and stopping from time to time to cover his face in his hands in a defeated pose; 2. a footballer, kicked in his private parts and suffering because of that; 3. a lady, kneeling at first but then getting up, trying to walk a bit and then falling on her knees again. All 3 characters are defeated, they somehow failed in their lives. The place they are in now, represents some sore of the afterlife, where they suffer. This scene relates to both, the movie and the song I chose.
I knew that this is going to be the last scene in my projects. At first, I only had a vague idea of the other scenes. I wanted them to be city scenes. One happening on top of a building in the city and the other one, to be in the same city, but on a street level, among the regular city life.
I wanted to have three scenes in this MV, all of them to include animated elements (characters or vehicles etc.) and to have “Iris” song played throughout them continuously.
I created this Iris storyboard. It started with just the lyrics and a few thoughts, but then developed to a place describing my MV idea well. It’s telling the story through photos, sketches and notes. It is a starting point and inspiration for my further work in Unity.
