New Year, new idea for the Music Video.

Working on my music video project, I was focused on a song from the “Moana” movie. “How far I’ll go” was my chosen tune. After having a break over Christmas, I came back to work on my assignment.

I had my storyboard almost ready and did some exercise with models and basic animations on Mixamo and Unity. I decided to model several elements of the island – the place where the action takes place in the experience I am working on. I gave it a try and made some palm trees and rocks in Maya, next imported them to my Unity project. I added a music file with the “Moana” song and animated the character – one basic animation to start with; standing up as the song begins. It all worked quite well, however…

Just recently, while I talked about my project with a family member, I explained a scene change option and it has been said that a person standing on a rooftop in a big city would be an example of a scene. This gave me a completely new idea for my project.

At the same time, when I looked back at the storyboard I’ve been recently working on, I realized that I was trying to replicate the actual movie clip too much, rather than create an experience based on the song. The song was supposed to be an inspiration for the VR music video project. Sadly, my storyboard looked like a description of a traditional music video that already existed. I tried to think of how my music video would work as a VR experience and I was stuck. All I could see, was the girl on the island, feeling some unexplained and forbidden by the family, connection with the water, eventually following her inner voice and sailing away to see how far she’ll go, to paraphrase the song. I love that story in the actual movie, but again, it came out that I was having my mind fixed on something that was already there and wouldn’t necessarily work as VR music video.

Luckily the rooftop topic gave me a new, fresh idea for the project. I felt like I have just discovered something big! I just need to stay focused and work hard to make sure I can create it as I want, and on time. A wider explanation, along with a new storyboard to follow – there are ideas for scenes, animations and some interactions in my head. For now, I can share that it will be an “Iris” song by Goo Goo Dolls from the “City of Angels” movie, where the angels are often watching a big city life from the above.
