VR inspiration
One of my recent assignments was to prepare and present a meaningful to me Virtual Reality (VR) project. It could be an idea, product or a concept, something that inspired me to decide to go on a VR path.
After reflecting on my way towards starting a BA (Hons) Virtual Reality | UAL course,
I knew that I am going to talk about the art.
The physical aspect of traditional art, its presence and tangibleness are something that define it. Creating visual arts in VR takes it to another level. It has possibilities and potential, unimaginable for people in past decades, even though computers and technology have been involved in art-making for a while.
Artificial intelligence robot, AI-da working along with a human artist, Sadie Clayton Aida Robot & Tate Modern — SADIE CLAYTON, is a contemporary tech-art project I had a chance to look at London’s Tate Modern in 2019.
Adding AR elements to the actual exhibition became a popular and engaging way to encourage people to visit galleries and interact with presented art. London’s Royal Academy or San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art are world known places using this technology.
The most exciting to me are VR introducing art ideas. Some of them involve experiencing the painting’s scene, like the one presented by the National Museum of Finland where user can walk around characters and even have little interactions with them in VR.
The Kremer Museum is a fully virtual art gallery, where not only the presented art doesn’t physically exist (still can be experienced), but also the building itself has been created in VR, https://www.thekremercollection.com/the-kremer-museum/ .
Tilt Brush by Google is a tool allowing to create the actual art in VR. It opens new doors to people who want to express themselves through their artwork, but not necessary have the access to art studios and all needed equipment, often bulky and expensive. It is a new way to design and make art. Sounds and looks truly amazing! I am hoping to test it out over the Christmas time.
My future plans are to be involved in the VR Art field, to be able to create and develop interdisciplinary projects, where the cutting edge technology meets the artistic expression.
